OCTs

OCT - Original Character (OC) Tournament (T).

You and your OC get paired with an opponent and their OC. You get a deadline, and maybe some other rules/qualifiers, then you draw a comic, best one wins!

Typically the ones I have enetered have had quite a tight time limit, roughly 2 weeks, to complete the comic in. Quite a feat, but I always try to submit something that looks complete, even if it lacks polish.

Black Market Brawl 2 - Character - Tansee Thirty

This is an experimental module of AI with a "Human Element" an attempt to derive creativity and life from generative AI by providing "desires" and "emotions". In an attempt to avoid an "I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream" problem, it was intalled within a TanC Model 30 as it it the cheapest availible model that features high fidelity sensor arrays for most human senses, and a capable voice modulator. The TanC Model 30 also features a high reliabilty rate, several rapid motion jets, powerful limbs, all in a compact frame that means no adjustments need made to existing infrastucture!Tansee Thirty is the result of this, ultimatley a failure, it could barely comprehend giving itself a name and still seemed unable to express itself.Over time Tansee Thirty would seemingly go into rages on occation, leading to property damage. This led to the scrapping of the project. However, before Tansee could be destroyed, it disappeared.

Little OC's in Nightmareland

Iron Goblin

The proor OCT I competed in, with an interesting set of rules: one page, one week.
Unfortunatley I got knocked out round 2. Fortunatley it means I can just put all the submissions here!

I did have a lot of fun, despite being double clowned! The one page requirement really made me push to polish the work, the fist page especially. The second was fun but shceduling on the week of competion left me with a day to be able to do the comic, though I think I made effective use of the time.

War for Rayuba

Fog of Graves and Eudoxia

The first OCT I entered, where I learned the most. These are all early works, but still some of my proudest.
Almost every comic was written by RainbowSamphire and can be found to the right, with page samples below.

War For Rayba Writeup (this is kinda long and rambling)

Fog of Graves was a DnD character (well ultimatley a 3 of them) who was morphed to fit the setting of Kill Six Billion Demons, initallly I joined with him to have a side to cheer for. Inspired I spent 1 week, cancelling DnD, to do 2 pages for an intro comic, I joined Bastion and hurrah team.

Then, the "Grand Battles" were announced, a way for those not in the main 1v1 fights to also join in. I completed an 8 page comic in 2 weeks, fully coloured, if a little rough, RainbowSamphire was a wonderful proof reader. I felt like yeah, I can get into the swing of things.

And then round 2 rolled around and I got selected for a 1v1 battle! Obviously I'd impressed someone, I did Royal Blood, 12 pages and a cover, I was getting better and the excitement drove me on.

And I was on a roll, I was in a minline round with Fog till round 6! I didn't win all of them, after losing to a monster of a comic vs Mnem in round 3 I asked RainbowSamphire to actually come on as my writer, and had a great time till Brickmancer brought and end to Fog in round 6, I had signed up for a Death Battle, the losing OC was no longer alive in the W4R canon, and could no longer fight.

So Rainbow and I put our heads togerther and came up with Eudoxia, unfortunatley missing the 1v1 fights she turned up in a Grand Battle for an introduction and to fight Shleeb and Buek.

Then, in the final round, team Bastion had built up enough kills for two Resurrections, Fog had consistenly been second place in previous team votes, but this time there'd been more deaths, more fan favourites, the enigmatic Murder Cube snatched the top spot and it was between the Ashtons and Fog, and it was a tie. a team captian flipped a coin on a webcam to decide Fogs fate.

And he got it!

The sad cat was back and just in time for the final battle, I rushed out a refreshed ref sheet, replaced Eudoxia in the roster for battles and my boy got in! Working together with @MrFurjiu on Root and Bud was a true wonder, collaberating with another (far better) artist was inspiring, especially sharing tips and tricks, I remeber impressing by how quickly I could thumbnail a script, something I had learned to help the back and fourth with a writer.

Truly this experience is what set me onto a path of really enjoying art, I always say my main improvement was the ability to finish a piece, I have so many unfinished portraits of DnD characters and fanart for podcasts, from before I started War for Rayuba, now I have pages and pages of comics, a folder full of Artfight attacks I completed over a week and a half.

Never let perfect be the enemy of good, fail fast and learn from it.

Goku Royale 1/2 + Hellcoaster + Succession Showdown

Youngster, R for Revenge, Penrose, Gravity Fiend, SCP-71119

Ok this is a big mashup, the premise of the "Goku Royale" is your character is just about original, a knockoff or mashup of entertainment properties. I entered Youngster in Goku 1 as I was also entering STAB OCT and wanted something I could do quickly in case I ever found myself multi track drifting OCTs (I did, W4Rs Final overlapped with the STAB round 1) I amanged to get quite far and then, round 4, vs 3 other very skilled artists I choked, dithered on the script and didnt have time to put out a truly finished comic.

Luckily a side contest within the same space sprung up, I worked with RainbowSamphire again, created R for Revenge and wow, after a hard fought battle we won an OCT!

Roughly a year later Goku 2 was launched, Rainbow and I teamed up and created Penrose. Carcosa is easily one of my favourite comics I've done, and it lost to a frankly incredible work by my opponent. Unfortunatley we lost in Round 3.

Another side contest was launched, Succession Showdown, I was busy but still wanted to participate, entering Gravity Fiend I had fun but ran out of steam for the character, round 3 had terrible scheduling issues and I couldn't manage even the low polish style.

So i came back in with SCP-71119 for the final round, explicity to put a soundtrack to someone elses finale.

I had such an unbelivably good time with Insurance Fraud #2. It was a great sendoff to my time with Goku 2.

Other OCTs

S.T.A.B

Pokemon themed OCT! RainbowSamphire writing again. There's a long story here, but not enough comic to justify it.

Round 1

Hog Haven

The Editorial OCT was a one panel comic contest I was knocked out of in Round 1, so I entered the side contest, drawing only on index cards. this was great fun and I won!
